Mac Users Beware! June 20, 2008 D. Engstrom (Portland, OR) Mac users should be aware of the fact that this drive will not support mounting via NFS. You will need to use SMF/CIFS which has a multitude of issues around file names. SimpleShare firmware has not been updated in years.
I am throwing it away May 3, 2008 K. Hudson (Tempe, AZ) Mine is headed for the trash. It worked okay for a month. Then it started losing its network settings. I dealt with that by resetting it for another few months. Now the drive is showing as failed/inaccessible. I would try to fix it, but I just cannot trust it. I have already purchased a replacement and started using it. I am quite disappointed with this product as well as the support web site. Seems like the manufacturer could care less about this item in their line up. I recommend that you keep on looking.
Updated: Slow start, smooth ride, crash landing...not reliable! December 14, 2007 T. Ford I purchased this product and, while the connection setup went well, I had quite a time getting the drives mapped on any computer in my house. Coupled with my busy schedule and the strange customer service hours, nearly 2 months passed before I was able to resolve it. Since I could still manually upload files via the web interface, it wasn't the end of the world. The fix to my problem was simple and life progressed. I'm now able to easily access the drive away from home. It can be slow, but as long as it works, I'm satisfied. (Be warned: The reset button is probably best reached with a larger paper clip, not a small/standard one or the tip of a mechanical pencil.) Update (4/21/2008): Although I see that this is no longer available, it's probably worth stating that this product had an inexplicable failure two weeks ago. I tried restarting and resetting measures as recommended by troubleshooting. I may very well have lost all of my data. :( Since it has been barely more than 6 months, I have initiated the request for refund process for the warranty (3 years for this storage capacity). If this doesn't go smoothly, I will most certainly provide another update. Update (7/12/2008): I have set up the replacement drive, but I'm not sure how excited I am to have this again. I've already lost a significant amount of data. I'm not sure how much faith I have in this refurbished one. While they weren't willing to reimburse me for the drive, they did send the replacement within a week of having received the broken drive from me. They also rather quickly sent replacement accessories (cord & stand) that I'd previously included with the drive under the impression that I'd be getting the cost of the drive returned to me.
almost perfect solution for simple home network December 9, 2007 Janet Roth (Oakland, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Boy - I have had none of the problems people report. I installed the drive very easily, have moved my photoshop elements catalog to it, and successfully pulled up that catalog with all tags showing on my other home computer. I have plugged a FAT32 (Western Digital Passport) USB drive into it and successfully read the files on it and created one. Oh - and I easily mapped a drive letter from Windows explorer/My Computer (on both computers)... And I just felt it and it doesn't seem all that hot to me. I have not yet tried the remote iShare access (I want to understand any security issues before I do that. But it seems to give plenty of ways of defining and limiting access). The one thing I can't do - which I think is not their fault - is share my HP multi-function printer using it. But their documentation was very clear, before I bought it even, that this would probably be the case. And I have the clear impression that it isn't available for that printer from ANY print server. So not their fault it seems :-)
Simple, quick way to get more home network disk space November 11, 2007 T. Hessler (Bozeman, MT USA) I purchased this product based on a recommendation in Consumer Reports magazine. It was in fact simple to install on my small home network and easy to configure and use. It has rudimentary security - better than none, but not very reassuring at times. Still, I am not sure if I could handle a product that had a complicated security scheme. This works for me: it is easy to install, fast, enabled me to put many files shared by our home computers in one location thus freeing space on our personal notebook/laptop computers. I would buy another.
