4 out of 5 stars Ignore the naysayers, good system for the price.   November 22, 2008
sodakmonk (Midwest USA)
Budget level audio equipment often seems to get bashed on the web, often unfairly. Cheap gear may have a higher failure rate - so buy from a reputable retailer and return defective items!
This system has good sound and great features at a budget price. Ignore the inflated "1000 Watt" claim. The amp in this receiver uses three STMicro IC amplifiers (#STA506). These are digital amps that put out a clean 60 watts/channel RMS, but leave out the heavy weight and heat dissipation of older high power amps. Technical specs for theseIC amps can be found on the web - THD is about 0.1% at typical volume levels (not bad at all). The USB port works with flash drives and some MP3 players. Dolby Prologic II gives a new sound to my CD collection, I'm listening to everything over again. Dolby 5.1 DVD's sound even better than Prologic or plain stereo.
I'm using my trusty old Infinity bookshelf speakers in place of the 2 front speakers that came with this. This improves the weak midrange that is often a problem with surround sound systems. This system won't shake your walls, but my living room is 18x24 feet and it's loud enough. Serious audiophiles will want something better of course, but this system should be enough for most typical homes & apartments.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good...   September 1, 2008

I just bought the RT2870 from Wal-Mart which for all intensive purposes looks just like the RT2770. I hooked it up last night and have since used it to play movies and CD's. The sound is very good, but not excellent (what else can you expect for this price?). I can't imagine anyone needing to turn it up all the way to get decent sound. If I turned mine all the way up, I think my windows would blow!! People have also complained about the speaker wires. Two of the speakers (one left, one right) have VERY long wires, I can't imagine it not being enough, unless you just have a huge living room (mine is 12x18, and I have tons of slack in the wire). The other two are not as long. I never could get the sound from just my TV to come through, and I hooked it up just like it said. So unfortunately I guess that means that my sons' PS2 isn't going to play through this, and that would have been cool. Also, as far as the tuner goes, I could only pick up 2 stations, and neither of them are of interest to me. So, the only good I'm getting out of it thus far is for DVDs and CDs. This is my first ever home theater so it's good enough for me I guess! Thank goodness for the color-coded wires, it made setting up a breeze (and I was quite nervous about it, as I am not mechanically inclined and usually *hate* putting things together). As far as recommendations go, if you are a serious entertainment junkie and like all of your stuff tricked out, spend double this price and get something that will probably suit you more. Our entertainment needs are pretty basic (and so is our budget) so this suits us fine. Just be warned, the receiver box is HUGE and you have to give it lots of space (4" on each side and 2" on the top) to keep it from overheating (and burning completely out!)...and they aren't lying, the thing runs HOT. Walmart.com has a Pioneer surround sound system for around $250, and if I were to recommend something a little higher priced and better quality, it would probably be that. You usually can't go wrong with Pioneer, but RCA tends to be hit-and-miss. Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase!

2 out of 5 stars Didn't Last Long   August 27, 2008

It seemed nice while it lasted, which was about 4 months. This unit runs very hot and I even had fans on it. One day it just had too much and quit on me.

Pros: Lots of inputs, looks nice, decent sound.

Cons: Subwoofer came with a vibration, probably bad seal. I bought mine recertified, so this may also be why. Not very loud, had to turn up to 45/50 to get decent volume.

Other Comments: This was my first Surround Sound System with a Receiver. I have upgraded to a Pioneer VSX-D812 which blows the RCA way out of the water. If you're looking for something cheap to put in a small room and not use alot of power or much noise the RCA is fine. If you're looking for a decent Surround Sound System, look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Nice design, nice power, poor quality.   April 14, 2008

For the price, I guess you get what you pay for. 1000 Watts of power?, not quite. I bought this unit last week, and will be returning it. 1. While the sound is great for the price, it doesn't go loud enough. The 2 movies we've watched with it so far, we had the volume at the max (50) just to get a decent sound. 2. The display is so dim that you cannot read it unless you are a foot in front of it, and that is on the brightest setting(should have on-screen display). You are not able to see what settings you are changing due to the poorly lit display, if you want to up the volume or try to adjust the sound from your couch. You are stuck trying to adjust the sound by sitting a foot from the receiver. I have a 14 year old pro logic receiver that puts out 80w/channel, and can go several times louder than this so-called 150 watt per channel receiver. 3. Also, the speakers wires, are hard-wired to the back of the unit, so if you want to add longer wires to the rear speakers, you have to splice it to the existing wires, or try to take the speakers apart and re-wire them. The receiver probably weighs about 5 lbs, if that, it feels like an empty case.
Don't waste your time with this unit.

1 out of 5 stars terrible system   February 24, 2008

I wanted a powerful thousand watt system to replace my 350 watt system that was getting old and did not have the inputs that i would like now that I have an hdtv. This system has all the inputs and outputs necessary for home theater it really lacks in sound quality. There is no hard thumping realistic bass. My old system had a 100 hundred watt sub the sounded so much better. When watching a movie with gunshots and special effects I would say that this system will leave you unsatisfied.
