Okay but short battery life, no date-stamping of files, hard to switch between menus, bulky height April 2, 2007 D. H. Kroman (Southern California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a cheap voice recorder, this product may do the job adequately but not superbly. It does have 256Mb of RAM, which is on the low-end of USB storage. Furthermore, the USB connector is beneath the removable speaker cap. Unfortunately, the bulkiness of the recorder makes it hard to insert it into the USB ports that are on the side of a laptop, especially those laptops that have slim cases. Fortunately, a USB adapter cable is provided to alleviate this problem. When you plug the DMP-M1200 into a USB port, it draw power from the USB port so it doesn't wear down the battery; however, it seems to go into automatic transfer mode, whereby you can access it as it it were an external hard drive (akin to the way many digital cameras work). Unfortunately, you can't access the other features while it is in this mode, such as the FM radio -- and there is NO external AC power adapter available (there is no port into which an adapter can be inserted). Battery life is poor if you use alkaline batteries; I can get only five to seven hours playback time; a bit longer if I only use the FM radio option. BTW, you can only get good reception with the FM radio when you have the headphones plugged in: the FM radio uses the wires of the headphones as its antenna. But you don't have to use the headphones provided; I used my Sony headphones and the reception was decent. To extend battery life consider either rechargeable NIMH batteries or lithium batteries, which can last up to seven times longer (ideally). I found it difficult to switch between the different modes; using the mini-joystick on the top, you have to hold it down at times to switch between the different recording and playback modes. Recording doesn't allow the date-stamping of files. All files are date stamped December 22, 2002, so when I download the files into my PC, I change the default file name (RECV-001, RECV-002, etc.) to the date. The product does come with a nice manual, in both English and Spanish. As a simple voice recorder, this product is okay, but there are more professional voice recorders out there (Olympus, Sony, other models from Sanyo) with longer battery life, date-stamping, a slimmer design, and easier-to-use menu system. But none of these come with a radio.
great product December 26, 2006 Sandra Savoy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this product is great and whoever is thinking about buying it should. It has great sound quality when you need it. I like to sing so I really needed it to not be staticy and it isn't. Also, i got it for 108.00 off! I was very happy about that deal. The only thing bad about it is you need to put the headphones in the jack in speaker mode for the antenna or it will sound a little bit staticy. other than that this is a great buy and it holds 999 files of each almost 5 minutes long that is a steal.
Broken after 1 month December 5, 2006 Seth Joseph (Oklahoma City, OK USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This recorder is awesome... when it works. The USB interface is great, the display is bright and very user-friendly and it worked great with my iBook (no need to download drivers). However, after less than one month, the Play/Stop button stopped working. That's also the Power button. As such, the thing has been rendered useless. I'm sending the recorder back to the factory. We'll see how Sanyo handles is.
The most functionally available voice recorder September 29, 2006 Luke M. Peters (Brooklyn, MI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This device is pretty schweet!! I was looking for a voice recorders and unless HIGH quality is of great concern for you, this product works very well. I already carry a flash drive around my neck so this helped to solve the problem of carrying too many devices around. It DOES NOT come with a lanyard oddley enough and is just heavy enough so you know it's there. The radio doesn't perform all that well, probably from the lack of an antenna. The device is somewhat bulky so if you have to plug in the flash drive in a tight spot - good luck. My only complaint about the controls/interface is that while playing back a recording you can't just delete it while it's playing. You have to return the Voice menu and delete it from there. Overall this an excellent product and recommend it as a voice recorder/USB flash drive.
