Robust! December 11, 2008 Dave Thau I've had one of these for two and half years. I've dropped it, stepped on it, and yesterday it fell into a glass of water and sat there for about 2 minutes before I noticed. It still works! Battery life is as advertised. I love this thing.
The one I've been searching for!!!!! October 15, 2008 E. Taylor (Sunland, CA USA) I've had many players before, they all had something I didn't like. This one has it all. Here are the things that I liked. The buttons on this really work well. Not spongy like some I've had. The power is unmatched with the larger battery. In fact, the unit's size is almost entirely because of the AA size battery. I have some old rechargeable nihm's that again have a use - they were so weak and wouldn't recharge fully that other devices couldn't use them. This player will use them, although they come up as partially drained - which is what I'd expect. The menu system is easy to use, and no mindless icons - actual english words. Maybe I'm old, but I have never liked icons. I can read and words are much easier to figure out than some unintelligble icons. The display is bright, has 3 settings for how long the backlight stays on. The contrast good, can be read with the light off. It has just the right number of pixels which makes the text very readable. I use only mp3 files and it will display the folder, title, etc. You can set up 7 levels deep, 299 folders, and 999 songs total, which is fine for 2 gigs. You can navigate to any folder and choose folder play. If you want to play a set of folders, place them in a folder of its own and choose that parent folder to play. Simple things like the plug isn't recessed which makes all my headphone, and other mini jacks fit nicely. The fast forward and fast reverse even let you back up from a song to the prior song and thereby start reversing at the end of a song. It even will circle around to the last in a playlist and start reversing that. It's these little things that were thought out fully. You can set an audio beep feedback for pressing buttons - or turn it off. The buttons are well placed and can be found by touch given little ridges on the faceplate. Hold button works great. Has a nice little hook for adding a necklace (not included). Small, lightweight. With a couple of rubberbands I can mount this on the top of my bose headset and go nearly wireless. Ok, so I'm a little weird but I think that bose should have an mp3 option for their headsets anyway. But this solves that for me. It has plenty of volume, and you can hold down the keys to get it to change fast. It has 25 levels. Did I mention the display font is nice, upper/lower case plus some special characters. It's got a surround effect and one called remaster - though I can't tell what remaster does. Surround through headphones seems to give the stereo separation a boost. Ok, CONS: The battery compartment seems a bit fragile. But I just use a rubberband to keep it closed. I think with some rough use this might be a weak part. No multi-level custom EQ, but it does have a few standard settings (rock, classic etc.) That's it!
Very durable mp3 player September 20, 2008 A novice user (USA) I have put this mp3 through demanding use for well over a year, and am impressed enough that I'm considering buying another one and setting it aside for the day the one I have finally dies. No need to chime in with the other reviewers, as they explain the features well. However, one additional feature not mentioned is the ability to delete songs "on the fly" without having to connect the player to a computer. This is a really nice feature, particularly if you have a complex directory structure set up for different musical formats (which is the workaround to using play lists). Speaking of directory structures, I have also found that using this method of organizing music is a lot less of a hassle than organizing music by play lists. With a directory structure, you simply create a folder on this mp3 player for each type of genre (or artist) you want, with additional subfolders for more specific sub-genres. Then, simply drag and drop the files you want into each of these folders. No messing around with having to ensure the file tags are accurate in order to effectively use play lists. I have two Sandisk players that rely exclusively on play lists in order to create customized formats, and they are both collecting dust in a drawer. Other observations: The lack of a belt clip didn't bother me much, as I created a makeshift clip that I glued onto the bottom of the unit, and it works great. Nor did the exclusion of an AM/FM tuner; I found I didn't miss it. Lastly, if you plan to use this player outside in winter weather, you'll need to insulate the unit by placing it inside a coat pocket, as the sound deteriorates if directly exposed to sub-freezing temperatures. When insulated, it performs fine even at 0 degrees F and below. All in all, a great little unit that can really take a beating from weather extremes, and the occasional accidental drops on blacktop. Mine is pretty dinged up now, but still delivers the quality and durability that I expected from a Panasonic product.
Amazingly good sound for lower priced MP3 Player January 16, 2008 S. Stanley (Denver, CO USA) I got one of these for my brother. Not only does it come with the best sounding ear buds of any player I have ever seen (Creative, iPod, iriver, etc.), the unit itself puts out a very high quality sound. I'm mostly an iriver fan, big time, but I was not springing iriver type bucks on a player for my brother who is hard on things. But gee, this sucker puts out great sound. I was amazed. And, having tried most all major brands (I'm pretty into this stuff), these are the best sounding earbuds of their type I have ever heard (the ones that come with the player). Yes, it's overwise very basic. Nothing fancy. Only a few EQ settings (but two of them are fantastic, and I wish even iriver would take a cue from whatever Panasonic did here to get the sound so right from it's EQ settings). The only downside is, as noted by another, I do not think this supports playlists. That's no big deal for many people. The other is that the battery door seems exceptionally flimsy. Bummer that. Otherwise, fabulous deal for the money in terms of what you buy a player for (great sound you can take around with you). I do not think there is a better sounding MP3 player for twice this money on the market. (And there are NO better sounding ipod models than this one.) Sound is according to taste, of course, but to me, this is a great deal.
Small, durable, practical December 18, 2007 Narz (Santa Cruz, CA) Excellent lil' product. Battery life unmatched, easy to transfer songs (just drag & drop). My only problem w/ it is that it doesn't play WAV or AIFF files. I even dropped it in a stream once while hiking. It was full on submerged for about a second & a half. I pulled the thing out, dried it off and it still works to this day (not recommended nor I am going to repeat that, just was pleasantly surprised).
