Good player but backlight burned out within 3 weeks December 27, 2008 Robert Hess (Arlington, MA) This is my second Zen Plus. The first one I used for over a year and still works. I bought a second with more memory but the backlight burned out within 3 weeks and it is nearly unusable.
Great, not too pricey entertainment December 16, 2008 Celia (Saint John, New-Brunswick Canada) The Creative Zen V Plus is a great little player for people who don't really care that much about options, that just want to listen to music. This is my second Creative product (Creative Zen Micro 5GB Digital Music Player - which broke after being dropped too many times) and although I did have problems with the Micro, this one hasn't disappointed me yet. Very lightweight, and the controls are pretty easy to use. I've been using it while doing renovations around the house, it's great! Carries easily and the music sounds great.
Too expensive for a disposable MP3 player December 8, 2008 W. Thomas (Tampa Bay area, Florida) Purchased Sep 2007 Pro: Compact, easy to always have with you Con: Video only supports uncompressed AVI 5-way button is too fragile Poor Customer Service This was my first MP3 player purchase. I wasn't sure how much I would actually use it. I don't want to spend too much on a toy that I wouldn't use, but I also didn't to sacrifice quality and go too cheap. I knew and trusted Creative Labs, having used their sound cards for many many years, and thought that $90 (on sale) was a decent price point. The video capability is a cruel joke. The screen is on the small side, but quite clear. The problem is the video support is only for uncompressed AVI format. This high speed slideshow takes much more storage space than the compressed version of the same video. The battery life is quickly drained when viewing the videos. In my opinion the videos are hardly worth it. The music capacity is quite good. I used WinAmp, which supported transcoding to give a reduced quality (bit rate) copy of the master library files on the Zen. This was a fairly slow process, but the benefit was being able to fit more music on the device. I experimented with the bit rate until I found the lowest value that did not provide noticeable/unbearable artifacts in the music. I was able to fit around 3500 songs on the Zen. This is highly dependent upon bit rate and song length. After about 6 months the 5-way button cracked into several pieces and fell apart The post that the button seated on is recessed and unreachable with adult sized fingers. This failure rendered the Zen useless. Contact with customer service was unsatisfying. They automatically consider this failure a sign of abuse and do not honor the warranty. The repair cost quoted me was more than the street price of a new one. This for a 1 cent piece of plastic?!? I learned that the eraser from a mechanical pencil makes a decent cap for the post, and when it deteriorates I can make quite a few new ones for less than the repair from Creative Labs. The headphones shipped with the Zen were OK only because I didn't know any better. My only complaint at the time was the stiffness of the wires. They would retain the shape of how I folded/coiled them and keep that shape while wearing them. After about 8 months use, a wire broke inside the insulation of the cord near the plug end of the cable. There was no visible sign of damage, but careful manipulation of the cord would bring the sound back. This damage came as a result of the cable having a straight end rather than a 90 degree bend to reduce cable stresses. I replaced the factory headphones with a pair of Sony MDR-EX71SLA and could not believe the difference. These Sony's opened my eyes to how bad ALL of the included headphones really are. I eventually upgraded to an iPod Classic 160G, which I should have gotten in the first place. I was planning on using the Zen while exercising and such, as I would not care if it happened to get damaged, but my 5 year old claimed it has his. Surprisingly it has held up well to his abuse with no further damage. I would have given one star based upon my experience, but since it has worked so well for my son, I'll bump it up to two stars.
Good little MP3 November 11, 2008 Busy Mom (Fruita, CO) I bought this as my first MP3 player. I did the research and wanted one good for audiobooks. I'm not sure exactly how the bookmark works, but when I'm listening and turn it off, it saves where I was. I turn it back on and I'm at the same spot. I like that. Cons: it won't upload information. So, you can download to it, but you can't manage the info or change it through your computer. You can only add and delete. Say you have a list of songs and want to move one up higher in the list, you can't connect your Zen and do it that way. I've only found you have to make the changes to the playlist in the computer and re-upload the playlist to the Zen. It also doesn't have that much memory. If you want a lot of books or a few long books, you need more. But, other than that I've been happy with it. Oh, another thing. I bought some blue tooth headphones to have cordless. Well, it doesn't have an internal transmitter for that function so they don't work.
Great when it actually worked November 4, 2008 Yaya I originally purchased this product from a big box store in October '07, despite reviews saying that problems were common. I do a lot of commuting, so I planned to use it for music and audiobook files. I really liked the functionality of the product (simple to use, easy menus/navigation, easy importing) but the inconvenience of common breakdowns is not worth it. Luckily I purchased the service plan because I've had to put it to good use. Within the first month, it conked out. The store replaced it on the spot because I was within 30 days. Throughout the next 10 months it would often freeze (most noticably if I was fast-forwarding through a track) but came back to life after re-setting. In August '08 it completely froze; re-setting didn't help. I mailed it in for repair through my service contract, and the company sent me back a refurbished product. It worked fine for 6 weeks until the beginning of November, when it would freeze and display "Playback error" on the product's screen. Re-setting didn't help the problem, so I am once again sending it in. I will probably just buy a completely new product (from a different company!) but figured I may as well get this repaired since I've paid for the service.
