Not a Good Choice for Audiobooks December 29, 2008 Jane W. (Atlanta, GA) I listen to audiobooks often, so my husband gave me this device because it had the bookmarking and other capabilities recommended by the audiobook provider I use. It worked fine for the first few books, then suddenly stopped syncing them. I had a terrible time reaching anyone at Archos; their contact link didn't work, and their phones are rarely answered. I get a message telling when their business hours are, and then it hangs up--even if it's during their business hours. When I finally did reach someone, he was unable to help, so he had me return the device for a replacement. The second one worked fine for the first few books and then did exactly the same thing as the first one. We're going to purchase a different mp3 player.
A fun gadget October 15, 2008 The G-Man (Eugene, Orygun) I saw this Archo105 [under forty bucks] on Amazon and bought it for fun. It is smaller than a credit card, very thin and weighs nothing. Put it in your shirt pocket and you'll forget it's there. The sound is great. The video player is not so great but watchable. The interface is sorta clunky, but easy to use. It does have shuffle. No removable battery/no sd card slot/no external lock(hold) button. Archos105 interfaces with Windows media player 10, which will sync and easily convert many file types including AVI to mp3 or wmv. It will not convert mp4 files.(I don't know about Mac interface.) Since this player will only play mp3 and wmv files, other files will need to be converted to play in the windows media player v10. I am surprised how much video this 2gb player holds. When converted to wmv files, a 250mb avi file shrinks to about 57 megabytes. I have a whole season of The Simpsons on my player with lots of room to spare. For the money it is a good deal and I'm happy with this player. Shop by price and compare features on other players. Archos is known for great screens, but not in this case. A far better item is a Meizu player which has more EQ options and a much bigger and better screen and is just as small.
Not a bad player October 14, 2008 Jason HOCHING (Mesa, AZ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The only beef I have with it is that the video quality is sub-par, but, for the money, it's a great deal.
Archos 105 - AWESOME!!! September 20, 2008 William N. Bailey (Jamestown, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this device! Others have complained about the lack of FM radio (which I don't listen to) and the need for more space (which would be nice, but is not a huge problem.) The thing I like is the size, and the battery life... as well as the fact that it charges off the USB connection to my laptop. This thing just fits my lifestyle! Highly recommended... especially if you catch it on sale (as I did!) Also, Gizmos4Life shipped it quickly and in great shape... I highly recommend them as well!
Nice, small video player for the price August 26, 2008 none (Minnesota USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was mainly interested in the video playback features of this unit. I did listen briefly to the sample MP3s that came on the device, and they sounded fine to me. File transfer and charging are via a 5-pin mini-USB connector. Under Windows, you access the device through Explorer under the path My Computer\a105\Internal Storage. While you can directly place music and photo files through Explorer, video files must be converted and transferred using Windows Media Player. Consequently the Archos 105 requires video files in windows media (WMV) format. The resultant file that resides on the device is about 75 MB per hour, which means you should be able to cram 20-25 hours of video on the 2GB of internal flash (non-expandable). In the settings, you can choose for a video to playback once and stop, or to loop. In my test it played video for about 4.5 hours on a single charge. While the screen is small (160 x 128 pixels), it's good enough to watch tv shows on. You can fast forward and rewind through a video file, but not quick-skip (e.g. skip 30 seconds at a time). There is a resume feature, so you can continue watching a video at the point where you left off. Another feature is the ability to turn one of your photos into a wallpaper. Overall, it's a nice, small video player, especially if you can get it for $50. It also does mp3s and photos, and can act like a flash drive in a pinch. It's a great gadget to give to kids so they can watch their videos during trips.
