Above average video mp3 player January 5, 2009 Gadget Geek 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
On first impressions, the transcend T.sonic 850 looked impressive and as a definite option instead of an ipod. This unit has a good capacity, nice physical size (not too small, not too big...I find things that are too small too difficult to use), not a featherweight but it feels sturdy. After charging the unit and turning it on, the displays is very bright and pretty easy to read even the text at about 6 points (though some of the font choices make reading the smaller text a little more difficult). The interface is very easy to navigate. When plugged in via a standard mini USB patch cable (ultimately, i would prefer a built in retractable USB interface, but its still a nice change from a proprietary plug like my previous Sandisk player) you can just drag and drop music files and even playlists. In the transfer mode, the player can also be used as a flash drive. Sound quality is nothing extraordinary, but using the included earbuds the sound is better than average for units under $100. It is also nice that this player gives you the added features of an eBook reader, picture viewer, voice recorder, FM receiver and even movie viewer (haven't used it yet but that will come in handy to keep nephews and nieces during a night out or long car rides). Other niceties is a video conversion software, and a slideshow maker. I haven't used the player for a complete charge yet, but it is lithium ion that is supposed to be good for 22 hours, but I personally like to have AAA batteries that I can readily carry extras of. I do have to give mention to the fact that I appreciated that the player was packaged with a neck strap, headphones (decent enough) and even a silicone skin to protect it from small bumps and "in pocket neighbors". Overall, I think this player is a good deal for the price and features, and would recommend to anyone unwilling to shell out the hundreds needed for an IPOD.
My First MP3 Player January 1, 2009 ~~Hummingbirder~~ (Pataskala, OH) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't own an iPod, either, so this is truly a new experience for me. Obviously, I can't make comparisons, and this review is intentionally subjective. The product integrates several media functions: Music, Radio, Video, Photo, Text, and Recording. The quick start manual was of no use to me. The full text user's manual is 59 pages long, and is comprehensive; a very good user's manual. I downloaded music from Amazon, and also copied some CDs I already owned. It was very easy to do, and took little time to learn. FM radio is featured as well. It is not streaming or satellite. I found it received signals as well as my stereo. This is my favorite feature. I like listening to the radio, and you can record while you're listening. It's legal, and it's free. Bonus points for this feature. Video files must be converted to .mtv files. I get an error message every time I try to use this utility; it says I need a firmware update. Windows won't save the firmware update. Nevertheless, I successfully converted and transferred video files. Those must have been fake error messages. Saving photos is pretty straightforward as long as you have them in JPEG format. You can just copy them. The slide show converter is a neat little feature, but I found the process a little cumbersome. You have to convert photos to .sls, which should be simple, but took me quite a bit of time to figure out. The text function could be used to store lists, such as important dates. I won't use it to read e-books, but if I was a child, I sure would. I read books under the covers with a flashlight when I was a child; this would just be a new version. Other than radio, I won't use this to record. It may be useful to students, especially if they're having a hard time staying awake in class. You can partition the player into public and private areas, and you can use the player as a lock for your PC. The screen is very clear and the resolution is good. The sound is also good. I think it's quite good for downloading music and for listening to the radio. The other functions are nice to have. I'll leave to you whether they're worth having on this player vs other players.
Outstanding! December 29, 2008 Jennifer (MA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Transcend T. sonic 850 is an incredible little device. First, it is an MP3 player and FM radio tuner. Great for music...however, it also can be used for recording classes, lectures, etc...! Seriously, this is great. My daughter is a senior in high school taking pretty tough classes and is also a school newpaper "reporter" who uses this handy dandy device to record her "interviews" and her class lectures! Everyone who sees this wants one. My son, sophmore, made me get him one for his latin lectures and chemistry labs. I have to buy another one for myself to use in my massage room for my favorite massage music. These are just a very few of the possible uses of this device. The video is also pretty amazing. I downloaded a little show just to check it out and it was fantastic quality. I am so happy with this item! Will be buying a few more for family!
Low price, limited features, adequate for a pre-teen December 28, 2008 A. Dent (USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The T.sonic is my 12 yr. old's first MP3 player and, so far, he is happy with it. I would say that this little player is worth about what I paid for at one of Amazon's one-hour specials. I will first summarize what I got for my money and then I will have some closing thoughts where I will explain my rating. - The contents - The little box includes the player itself with a rechargeable battery (up to 22 hours of music playback or radio play on a full charge claimed) inside, a protective silicone skin, neck lanyard, a multi-lingual manual with the English section being 6 or 7 very small pages, the headphones, a WHITE (everything else is black) USB cable and a mini disk that has an extended version of the manual plus a video file conversion utility, a slide show maker and some utility that is supposed to password-protect files that one would save on the device. There is NO charger. The expectation is that the person who owns the player will use a computer to charge it through the USB cable. For those of us who don't carry a charged laptop next to their MP3 player, I found that a Blackberry charger works. I suspect that other independent USB chargers work as well. - Design, ergonomics - The player itself is not too bad looking. The screen is small but bright. The main 'button', below the screen, has the central button as the on/off, OK, and some select functions. It is surrounded by the up/down and right/left. These are not 'touch' buttons, you have to push them with some force for something to happen and, due to the player's slow response I found myself pushing the same button more than once before the player responded. There is a 'menu button' and a 'red dot' button on the right side and a 'lock' button on the left side. The buttons are not always responsive and it can take several seconds before an input is acknowledged by the player (more about that later when I discuss 'performance'). It is possible to press the 'left' or 'right' button and to cause the player to display the 'goodbye' message because the central button was accidentally activated when touching it meant 'turn off'. The interface is basic and anything that's a bit more 'complex', such as organizing a playlist can be difficult to execute. - Features - Computer interface: Any file can be loaded off a computer by simply connecting via the USB port, at which time the player becomes a 'removable drive'. .mp3, .wma, .jpg, .txt and other file types can be simply dropped into the 'drive' and they will be played or displayed as appropriate. Given that the device looks like a drive to the computer, one can create folders to better organize content. Music player: Play is adequate but accessing your favorite song once you have hundreds is a different matter. I am repeating myself but the fact is that the interface and ease of use leave a lot of room for improvement. Photo display: Pictures are displayed off a separate menu and, like the songs, can be difficult to organize. It can take 5 to 10 seconds to display a 4MB file. I have little doubt that, had I reduced the size/resolution of my photos, they would have been displayed a lot quicker but I didn't feel that the user was 'expected' to convert dozens or hundreds of picture files prior to loading them on the player. Voice recording: It works and the 'voice activated' trigger is useful. If one takes the time to meaningfully rename the voice files, they could become meaningful records. Radio playing: 20 FM stations can be preset on 20 'channels' and one can listen to a preset channel or seek a station not yet saved. The controls are a bit awkward but this is becoming a 'constant' observation already. An interesting feature is its ability to automatically scan the spectrum and assign stations to each of the 20 channels. It's a nice idea but, in my case, the same stations were assigned to 3 or 4 channels and some of the stations 'found' were nothing but static hiss. Video: I did not test it yet and it's not something that we are going to use. My son wanted a 'music player'. To play videos we have big screen TV's and laptops that do a much better job. I will enter my impressions here, once I have a chance to test it. E-book: Yes, it opens text files but one must be irresponsible to attempt actually reading a book on a postage-stamp size screen. We only have one pair of eyes and they don't get any better. Clock: Apparently, this model was not meant to be sold in the US. When setting the clock, you will find that the 'Pacific' time zone is labeled 'United States' and 'Eastern' seems to be called 'Venezuela'. Daylight savings time is available as an option to check but, who knows when that kicks in, since my time zone is 'Venezuela' now. File storage: I suppose this is a possibility but, with 8Gb thumb drives available for about $10, it would be a waste of MP3 player to actually attempt to use it as a file storage device. - Performance, quality - The player is overall slow. It is slow to respond to commands, slow to display large files, slow to turn itself on or off. The quality of sound is acceptable and the basic (as in cheap) ear buds could be easily replaced with something better. To conclude, this is something that my first born is likely to use for a while until he manages to impress me (good grades or some new belt color in Taekwando) into getting him something better. It's also a good way for him to get used with the concept of an MP3/gadget. This model's several shortcomings would normally earn it a 2-star but the not-so-high price pulls it up into the 3-star territory. I view it as a 'disposable' gadget and, as such, it can be considered a 'good buy'. To be fair, my little guy would give this 5 stars without hesitation. He is very happy with what he got and, if he's happy, I'm not unhappy either :).
AWESOME MP3 PLAYER!!! December 27, 2008 Terry Pick (TN, USA) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the feedback I received from my 15 year old son to whom I gave this little baby to put it to the test, might I add that by the time my sons were done playing with it, my other son, whom had just received a brand new 8gb ipod nano from his grandmother 2 weeks prior, wanted to trade it for this one! Soooooo, I reiterate: AWESOME MP3 PLAYER!!! The 8GB T Sonic MP3 Player is a very good product for the price. You can EASILY put songs, pictures, text documents, download full length movies, and even listen to a FM radio on this little mp3 player! (I've downloaded, Shooter, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Shrek, The Dark Night, and a few YouTube videos without even using half of its memory capacity!) You can also use this as a giant flash drive to transfer files up to 8GB, (depending your model) from computer to computer. My brother has an ipod and he has to use iTunes which can be a real hassle when you want to transfer files and songs quickly to your Ipod or mp3 player. With this device you simply drag you mp3 file(s) onto the device in "My Computer". You can also do the same with videos, text files, and pictures! It's that easy! The only thing I wished that the manufacture would change in future models is the ability to customize the layout of the mp3 player without it having to be connected to the computer... The sound on this is mp3 player is great, but the screen is a little small to view videos for long periods of time... The battery will last FOREVER! Its says in the users manual that it will last for 22 hours playing a song or listening to the radio... I watched videos nonstop on a 4 hour road trip with the battery icon never leaving 99% Wow!!! Overall I give this mp3 player a rating of 5 stars... it also has a cool recorder & FM radio to boot!! I really, REALLY like it! :-) ......me happy!
