1 out of 5 stars Lousy tech support for obvious problem   December 17, 2008

I received this as a gift. I was so psyched! Then I tried my new 120g ipod. No video. Then I read the directions. Ok, doesn't support that one. Tried my husbands 80g. It's supposed to work. It didn't work either. So I called tech support. Three times. No one ever asked if I was using a new ipod classic. Mostly they put me on hold or repeated back my information to me. Finally, it was confirmed that it was a compatibility issue with Apple and this device. That's two hours of my life wasted.
DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE A NEWER IPOD!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Player   October 27, 2008

I first purchased this portable player about 2 years ago. I absolutely love this player.

I first purchased this to take it on the road with me, and it sat mostly un-used for a long time. Then as I discovered the Divx support, and has since become one of my favorite players, even at home.

I convert most of my dvd's to avi's and Divx formats, and that way I can get 5-8 movies on a single layer dvd, or one movie on a CD. This player plays them great. I've even discovered, you can copy these avi's onto a SD memory card to keep from burning DVD's/ CD's and it will play them great, erase them from the SD card when I'm done. Not to mention you can carry a hand full of movies on an single SD chip.

The display folds flat for protection, will lift backward like the pictures show, and also spin around backwards and then will even lay flat from there, (atop the player). I've opened and closed mine so many times now, I do have a bit of a problem at times the display will flicker at certain spots upon opening. This is only sometimes, and to fix it I just open and close it again, and it goes away.

The player plays about all forms music, movies from DVD+-R,s CD's, CD/RW MP3's, and displays images like .jpg's. One thing rarely noted, I have played NTSC (North American dvd formats) and even PAL formated disk I've picked up over seas. It doesn't seem to care really, if it's a DVD it will play it. It is so nice to find a player that does this, and it should really matter that I purchased a DVD from anywhere, players should just play them and shut up about all this region garbage. This one does.

I'm getting ready to order a second one, just to keep handy should my other one quit, I'll have another handy.

It is really sad that companies like Apple want to require supporting equipment like this to 'license' it's compatibility. I really condemn Apple/iPod for this, it only leads to less products available and we all pay the price for it. If Apple would spend a little more resources improving it's products, like iTunes and QuickTime Player which are just horrid, instead of hassling companies for an extra buck, then Apple's products and everyone else's would be better.

For those that complain about compatibility with newer Ipods, everyone should note, this player has a Video Out connection, AND a video IN connection. iPods that have a video out connection, can use the cable to hook up to the players Video In connection. True, it is not the handy docking station type setup that the older iPod's use, but still functional.

The only thing I don't really like, is the sensor for the remote control, is located just under the video screen. Why is this bad? When using at home, or using the Video Out connection to feed a TV for example, and you don't need to use or see the player's built in screen, which can be flipped down, but then you can't use the remote control.

I too was a little leery of the built in battery. However my player will still will play an entire dvd movie and still have some battery life to spare, not a great amount, but some. I'd say right now, I'm getting about 2 1/2 hours when playing a dvd, a little more if using the SD memory chip and external speakers.

2 out of 5 stars Poor build quality   August 10, 2008

While the iPod integration (if you have an older iPod) is really nice, the unit itself has a very grainy, low-resolution screen and the build quality is very poor. Ours is literally falling apart (at the swivel hinge) and started doing so pretty early on in its life. It's a shame, since we have an older Philips 7" DVD player which not only looks better, it was made like a tank and it still good as new. This one, however, will need to be replaced soon. I would avoid this and all future Philips models, no matter how compelling the feature list is.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't support iPod Classic... loved the features though   March 30, 2008

The product was good.. played DVD's nicely and even enjoyed the fact that the screen is turnable so as to turn it into a tablet style player. The only draw back is that it does not support iPod classic which is the purpose I had for purchasing it. I returned it and bought an iLuv model that works with the iPod classic model. Time for Philips to make an upgrade!

thumbs up for this one. Had a battery charge issue, but Phillips is sending me a replacement, which will end up being an upgrade to this model. (Amazon did not have another replacement for the refurb.) I got a steal on the price (refurb) & after paying a small shipping price to Phillips I'm still making out great! Love all the options. HOpefully this will not have the I-pod issues the others had. Will wait before buying an ipod to go with it, untill I know which one. Love the SD slot & Divx features.
