Great Replacement September 8, 2008 Fugu (Monterey, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My 4 year old iPod Mini battery died so after a lot of searching I decided to go for this 850mAh version. The instructions were fine however the old battery had swollen such that it had wedged the main board to the case, it also caused the screen to darken in 2 or 3 spots. This meant that extracting the battery and main board was a lot harder than indicated in the instructions, however extreme patience meant that it came apart eventually. Just take care when you disassemble the unit your old battery may of expanded too. Also this new battery is just slightly larger than the original so it took some very careful manipulation to install the battery into the old space. While I had the unit open I also decided to replace the 4GB Seagate HDD with an A-Data 16GB Compact Flash. I would think that a 32GB card could also be used. Reassembly of the unit was fairly easy. I found that very gently squeezing the case along the edges made it much easier to reinsert the main board, battery and flash card. The battery had some charge so it powered up immediately and I could check it was OK. The darkening on the screen had also gone after relieving the pressure of the old battery. I let it charge overnight, restored it using iTunes and then let it run continuously for the rest of the day. It lasted 10 hours, a second charge-play cycle showed the same 10 hours. With the compact flash it makes no noise and iTunes showed it had 16GB of space, enough for my whole music collection. So now I have an iPod mini that will run 10 hours with all my music. If you are not comfortable dealing with the disassembly etc probably best not to undertake the replacement. However with this battery and the flash card I now have a great player for the next 4 years!
