Tipped on its edge, the speaker can be directed for personal listening. View larger. | Unique, Round Design with 360-Degree Sound With just a quick look at the Orbit, you know you're in for something special. Its round form uses a cone design integrated with a custom Altec Lansing speaker to project full, distortion-free sound in every direction. All your friends will hear the music and wonder where the great sound is coming from. If you would like a more personal listening experience, just put the Orbit on its edge for a more focused and directed sound. At just 3.5 inches in diameter and 1.6 inches tall, the Orbit will go wherever you go. Throw it in your pocket or purse and pull it out wherever you are: on a park bench, on the street corner, waiting for the bus. To turn it on, simply twist the entire speaker; this prevents it from accidentally turning on in your bag or pocket. And don't worry about damaging the Orbit; it's built to handle even the most reckless travelers. A smartly designed integrated cable management lets you wrap the cable around the speaker and keeps the stereo mini-plug out of the way when not in use. Outstanding Battery Life You don't have to worry about battery life with the Orbit; with three AAA batteries, the Orbit will play for up to 24 continuous hours, more than enough to keep the party going all night long. The Altec Lansing Orbit is backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box Orbit speaker (with 3.5-inch cable attached), user's manual.
Get a party started no matter where you are. |

Nice Affordable Speaker January 8, 2009 G. Dawes I agree a light to indicate this unit is still on would be great addition to this speaker, TOO easy to leave it on and not know, draining the batteries completely. Otherwise fine sound from a little speaker. At this price, 15$US on sale at the time of this writing, hard to go wrong. Price now at 26$US I find a bit to much for whats offered. That being said I think the Altec Lansing iM-237 at 40$US ridiculously priced. I would recommend instead to look at the Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Portable Audio System for iPod for near 100$US to get the best options for your listening pleasure. Charging, Sync and better sound also portable with a 7hr batter life and folds flat at about 2" thick.
Great Speaker January 6, 2009 R. Birmingham (Memphis, TN United States) I bought this as a quick, easy, cheap way to listen to podcasts and music on my iPhone while still being able to hear my surroundings. It works great. I picked up some rechargeable batteries at the same time so that battery cost wouldn't be an issue. It looks cool and matches the iPhone well. Sound quality is clear. I noticed other reviewers mentioning how hard it was to turn on and off. Initially I had that problem too until I realized you don't want to grip it hard and turn. Just casually turning it with no squeezing made it work like a charm. As a plus. Even though plastic is used in the construction the top grill is metal so it feels very durable for everyday use.
Good Quality- Until it Breaks January 5, 2009 Julie Brookes 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this speaker so that I could play my music wherever I went, because my iPod nano does not have a built in speaker. So I used it once and the sound was amazing for such a tiny speaker! But I noticed that it was poorly made- you have to twist it on and off, and there is a cord to plug it in. So I put it carefully in my bag to take it to a friends house. I used it there, but when I got it home, the speaker part had broken off from the top. Then I tried to put in new batteries but the battery compartment wouldn't open. So I plugged it in but the speaker did absolutely nothing. It says that it is totally portable, but it is too breakable to be portable. I have decided not to buy another because that one would break too.
on/off dial virtually impossible January 2, 2009 Dan (Castro Valley, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The on/off dial is virtually impossible to turn. You have to twist the whole unit like opening a jar except this is the tightest jar you have ever tried to open. You need a jar opener just to turn it on or off. It is probably is easier or harder depending on the build quality of the unit you got, but why take the chance? I bought two as a gift and one is a little easier to twist than the other, but both still require Hulk strength. The sound is fine if you can actually turn it on.
Incredible! December 31, 2008 C. Blackwell 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thing is so tiny, you wouldn't expect it to pack the punch it does. I have another set of fairly large speakers that take two C batteries each (ouch!) and die really fast, and don't get that loud. This itty bitty thing, on the other hand, has incredible sound, lasts forever, and is remarkably durable. Whenever I have it playing in my dorm room, people stop by and try to find where the good music is coming from--then are shocked to see how tiny the speaker is! It's great for tucking into a laptop case when you travel with a computer as a portable speaker system with amazing sound, or hooking up to an iPod to share your music (or listen to it all over the house, like I do.) It is hard at first to turn on and off with the twist feature, but I've gotten good at it. I've had it nearly a year now, and it's still going strong. I love this thing more than any big speakers I've ever bought!
