4 out of 5 stars Expectations or not, it was great!!!   October 5, 2007
G. Ludwig (MidWest)
To be honest, it wasn't what I expected, but I still enjoyed the video, because it brought situations that are affecting young adults to the forefront, so I applaud Sigur Ros. Though I wouldn't classify this as a complete CD, just a few pieces of some great work perfectly orchestrated together.
As for all the criticism on the video Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa, I personally feel like this video was releasing that part of life that was troubling someone for a long time. The crying out inside of the bitter memories, entangled in the joy and in the happiness that his surroundings condemned. This is seen not only by the father figure in the video, but the Rev., and the bible, the people at the game, and praying before hand, also the fish representing the so-called proper behavior that is accepted, right at the tossing of the dolls. So it was definitely a strict type of Orthodox environment (Not saying it is Orthodox, also you couldn't get better people for this video either, another applause).
My favorite part was the water gushing through the dolls eye, just an amazing capture in time, oh and where can I get one of those bottles with the drawing on it of that alien/angel/baby thingy.
Another killer part was when his dad was probably the most proudest of his son when he kicked that soccer ball in for a goal. Wow! It must have just been gut wrenching to see at that exact same moment, his biggest fear coming true, lol. Just rich indeed, it's a shame that there is so much ignorance in this world, that people can't be who they are. But the ending was just a what if, reflecting back to the beginning of the dolls, I guess choices.
Overall, if you're a fan of Sigur Ros, it's a great (CD/DVD) to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Smáskifa   August 11, 2006

This CD/DVD collection, along with the new Saeglopur CD/DVD set, is one of the most beautiful and worthwhile singles any band has ever released. Untitled #1 (aka Vaka) is a slow but powerful song, with a video which compliments it incredibly. #1 is possibly the best song from ( ), excepting maybe #4, but at any rate it is definitely single worthy.

Untitled #9 A-C (which the band refers to as "Smáskifa", the Icelandic word for "Single") is haunting and layered, with sampled vocals a little too creepy for mainstream music. Part C is mostly ambient fluctuations of the same note for four minutes. Whether listened to as the counterpart of #1, or just thrown onto the end of the ( ) album as the final track, it fits very well and has a good mood for closure.

The DVD is obviously a huge draw, with their three first videos collected on one disk. With most places selling this for less than 10 dollars, it's an incredibly good buy. If you like Sigur Ros, this is a good bet. If you're just interested in getting into them, even better, because the DVD has their earlier videos. 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars I am dumbstruck   December 13, 2004

This music is set to be an influence way beyond the next few years. What Radiohead started Sigur Ros have taken to undreamed directions and heights. But enough of the music- to the videos: Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa just left me dumbstruck and it's worth the paying price for this video alone. Although I'm not gay, I've experienced bigotry being one of the only punks in a small town many years ago and I related to the extent I was in tears at the end. The use of the camera, the confident and sophisticated symbolism, the time setting and performances of the two boys and the real film effect (as opposed to god-awful looking modern video) made me believe that this was an accomplished full film that the guys had edited for their own benefit. When I found out they directed it I realised that I am witnessing true greatness at work.Sigur Ros are the kind of band that make you celebrate the existance of life, connect you with Yourself and fill you with hope.Extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars late but important   November 4, 2004

this is my late review, but i felt i had to post to clear some stuff for those who go out buyin sigur ros cds to brag about listening to foreign music without even knowing what it means or what it stands for.
The music cd, didnt really shock because i knew what i was buying, and it was pure "sigur ros"; musical interpurtations that reflecte human emotions, which is why i like it, and why thier concert in houston was sold out a whole month prior. I was shocked cause i didnt think anybody would even know them.
About the gay kids, i can't relate to it, but it, and the song, so together perfectly. Same with the "untitled 1", which got the MTV Europe award for best video last year. It would be a good addition to any fan, and a brief intro to the sigur ros world

I don't know what to say. Sigur Ros has taught me what a powerful instrument the human voice can be. If you're obsessed with lyrics you will be disappointed... but if you are open to experience music in a new and different way then Sigur Ros is a group of talented adventurous beautiful rapscallions that will change something about you. If you ever have the opportunity to hear them live, do not pass go do not collect $200! It's up to you. The words mean nothing on their own. Just sounds -- sounds that will teach and change and entertain you. PS. Hi Bjorn thanks for the hub! Y'all rock!
