5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!   December 3, 2008

Another year, another Idol competition...and now another debut album! As of the last two seasons of America's favorite talent show, many critics are doubting the starpower of the actual winner. Ever since Daughtry broke the mold, outselling everyone in not only his Season 5 alumni, but almost every other Idol period, the top spot isn't as important to some as it used to be.

I'd call those people cynics, because if you look at the numbers, it breaks down like this: every Idol winner has had a successful career at least up to their first album. That is except for Taylor Hicks' dead-on-arrival career. Some have done much better than others (Underwood, Clarkson) but Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino & Jordin Sparks still racked up a good bit of success with their respective first albums.

All of that aside, maybe the real problem with Idol winners is not their commercial success, but rather the quality of their music. Has their ever been a flawless debut from a winner? Of course not. Those kind of pressures are probably what make artists over formulate their projects (ex: Sparks' debut) or completely rebel against the norms & ruin their career in the process (ex: Clarkson's last offering). No matter what the trials & tribulations of Idol debuts, the bar was set ridiculously high for this year's champ: David Cook.

So how could a soft rocker, whose specialty on the show was reworking pop classics into modern rock material, craft a great album? With the help of Rob Cavallo, of course! One of the greatest producer's of modern rock helped Mr. Cook morph his thoughts & feelings into this 13-track masterpiece. And no, that was NOT as typo, I did call this a MASTERPIECE.

What this guy has, that none of the other Idol singers had this season, is the complete package. Great vocal ability, a likeable personality & probably the most brains of any Idol contestant ever. He could've released an album full of pop covers, like his emo take of "Hello" by Lionel Richie, and did just as well. Instead he put some real effort into it, and we got something more than just another Idol record. This is a mix of active rock, stunning ballads & some great instrumentation throughout.

The powerful opener, "Decleration," sets the stage for what this album is like. Very, very, VERY catchy hooks & lyrics you can actually relate to (espicially in a jam like "Daily Anthem"). If the first couple tracks don't catch your ear, Cook's explosive vocals on the Soundgarden-esque "Light On" or the all-out rocker "Bar-ba-sol" are sure to do the trick. Even the mid-tempo's ("Life on the Moon", "Mr. Sensitive", "Come Back To Me", "I Did It For You", etc) have such compelling hooks they can't be ignored. By the time you get to the album's two best offerings, the winning Idol tune & Adult Contemperary hit "Time of My Life" & the simply astonishing power ballad "Permanent", it's almost unbelievable that the disc is so good.

I'll tell you first hand, from someone who also had high expectations for this project: Cook did an amazing job, and there is nothing bad to say about this album. A minor technical glitch comes in the form of a 10-minute space between "A Daily Anthem" & "Kiss on the Neck", which should have been seperated into two tracks, but that is barely worth mentioning. Even if there were 10 minute breaks in-between every track, I'd still listen through them for such great material.

Only time will tell if David Cook will have the kind of commercial success previous Idol winner's have, or if he will fall into obscurity as some have also done. No matter what, though, his music is "permanent"; it's what we should really remember...and dammit this is one album that'll be hard to forget.

Amazing start for AI 2008!
I am impressed with the quality of David's first CD and his voice, of course! I have 2 kids (10 & 4) and daily they can not have enough of this album, like me.:-) If David will continue in the same manner, his success will be maximum. For me, he is a young Bon Jovi! GO DAVID!

I voted for David Cook during A.I. but now I wish I had chosen David Archuleta! Cook's album sounds like a very generic rock album and all the songs sound almost the same - the same instrumentals and the same yelling in the end of each song. I thought that he would have a more diverse album but hopefully, he will try something new in his next album. On a side note, David Archuleta's album is just the sweetest album I have ever heard.

David---I love the CD!!! I also love Analog Heart and your other self titled Cd. I listen to them every day, along with the American Idol songs that I bought. Now I will be listening to this new album every day!!! You always have the BEST lyrics and sound. My daughter and I play and sing your original songs on keyboard. Steven Tyler was once my favorite rock singer, but now you are THE ONE!!! Thank You for being "you"---don't change a thing.

David if you are reading this where is all the wonderful music from the Idol show? All of us older woman that were apparently your fan base are going to be disappointed that this entire CD is rock and you put nothing of your sensitive versatile side on this. I hope this is flying off the shelves (I preordered it myself) but you are going to have to give us old ladies something to keep our interest if you want us to keep buying your CDs. My best to you.
